NEW BOOKS!

March already! I hardly know where to begin...

We're a little more than two months into 2008 and already have APRICOT BRANDY, HOUSE OF WHISPERS, CLOCKWORK HEART, and BLACKNESS TOWER out. Well, the last two aren't in stores yet (in fact, I've not seen either one myself) but they are printed and coming soon.

If you just can't wait, we have them all available online for direct purchase. (http://www.wildsidepress.com/Juno-Books_c_31-1.html)

The Latest

APRICOT BRANDY by debut novelist LYNN CESAR: Returning to the family homestead after her father's suicide, Karen Fox finds herself haunted by her past and bound by rage and guilt to a place she despises. Her lover, Susan, shows up to help Karen confront her past, but she, too, is overwhelmed by malevolent powers that have seeded the earth with evil. Only Karen, ex-con Kyle, an ancient Guatemalan bruja named Quetzal, and an army of ghosts, stand between Xibalba and the annihilation of us all.

PAULA SEZ: People seem either to love this one . . . or not. Some say that is the sign of a good book. :-)

HOUSE OF WHISPERS by MARGARET LUCKE: Claire Scanlan is launching a new life and a new career in real estate. She has a chance to sell a spectacular house but, as the site of a mass murder, the property is not attracting buyers. When Ben Grant, the handsome brother of one of the murder victims, shows her the empty house Claire experiences strange sensations that are both fascinating and repellent. Claire is also fascinated (and not at all repelled) by Ben Grant. But if Claire accepts her new-found paranormal power as real, she must also accept the responsibility for solving a bloody crime--even though Ben seems to be a prime suspect.

PAULA SEZ: There's always room for a well-written tale of haunted house and a psychic detective!

CLOCKWORK HEART by debut novelist DRU PAGLIASSOTTI: Taya soars over Ondinium on metal wings. She is an icarus, a courier privileged to travel freely across city sectors and mingle indiscriminately among its castes. But even she cannot outfly the web of terrorism, loyalty, murder, and intrigue that snares her after a daring mid-air rescue. Taya finds herself entangled with the Forlore brothers, scions of an upperclass family: handsome, brilliant Alister, who sits on Ondinium's governing council and writes programs for the Great Engine; and awkward, sharp-tongued Cristof, who has exiled himself from his caste and repairs clocks in the lowest sector of the city. Both hide dangerous secrets, in the city that beats to the ticking of a clockwork heart...

PAULA SEZ: Both familiar (spunky heroine, danger, mystery, romance) and unique (a steampunk city and interesting social order).

BLACKNESS TOWER by Lillian Stewart Carl: "Writing in the spirit of Mary Stewart, Lillian Stewart Carl spins a magical tale of a young Texas woman who travels to northern Scotland to learn about her ancestry. Lauren Reay discovers much more at Blackness Tower, an ancient sacred site damaged by a tragedy that resonates through the centuries. Only Lauren and the enigmatic owner of Blackness Tower have a chance of healing that damage--if they can survive the dark energies of the past. Romantic and atmospheric, Blackness Tower is pure reading pleasure." -- Mary Jo Putney, author of A Distant Magic

PAULA SEZ: What more can I say? Like Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters supernatural suspense? You'll love this book!

OTHER NEWS

We've also dropped both anthologies from the publishing schedule. WARRIOR WOMEN just didn't seem to ignite any excitement with the stores and BEST NEW ROMANTIC FANTASY 3...well...we could have gone ahead and done it as a hardcover or trade paperback, but since that didn't really fit in with our direction as a mass market line with a tighter focus, it was thought better to drop it.

The GUIDELINES (www.juno-books.com/guidelines.html) have recently been updated and I think most folks will see our direction reflected therein. We certainly are not shutting the door on anything and, not being a New York Publisher, we are not as constrained by having to base every decision on "the numbers". But, overall, we are going towards books we feel will appeal in mass market format.

I've been lucky to have had an extended period of "on the job" training and allowed to try flying in several directions at once, but I hope I am now applying what I've been learning and starting to build a solid, successful line of books.

Dropping the anthologies also has allowed me to do some catching up and I hope it will help me stay on top of a number of other poorly served tasks. Maybe I will be able to get to ebook editions and the slush pile (and many other things!) more promptly in the months ahead.

WEB SITE UPDATE

There are new pages for our four new titles on the Web site. For the three newest books, I've included "interview" material with the "About the Author" sections. We have such interesting people as authors -- it was past time we started sharing more about each of them!

Make sure to find out more about Lillian Stewart Carl's "odd synchronies of the writing life," Dru Pagliassotti's love of travel (and iguanas), and how Margaret Lucke faces the challenges of writing a paranormal mystery.

The ART GALLERY has been updated, too, as has the BACKLIST page. There's a new MEDIA section where you can download the basic "infosheets" for Juno Books. The downloads pages has been expanded with other fun EXTRAS. Like what? Guess you'd best see, eh?

BTW: I'm changing the Menu on the Web site -- if it is not all completed by the time you get this, it will be soon. The Menu on the entry page is correct.

EBOOK UPDATE

We have added three new ebooks since December: DANCING WITH WEREWOLVES by Carole Nelson Douglas, BLOOD MAGIC by Matthew Cook, and CHASING SILVER by Jamie Craig. All ebooks can now be found on our new (what else) EBOOKS page. (http://juno-books.com/ebooks.html)

You can also now find all Juno Book ebooks grouped under Juno Books as the publisher on Fictionwise.com.

NO CONTEST/TWO CONTESTS!

THE COLD QUIZ was a complete washout (freeze out?) with only AMANDA DOWNUM (who won the LAST contest) even giving it a shot. Gosh, we couldn't let her win again!

Obviously I am terrible at making up contests, but Juno's authors aren't! So --

Win CHRIS HOWARD's EXTREME BOOK TILE CONTEST (http://the0phrastus.typepad.com/the0phrastus/2008/02/extreme-book-ti.html) by coming up with the selected title for his sequel to SEABORN (coming in July) and you get to name a prominent secondary character in SEABORN! That's not the only prize, so check out the contest and leap in.

STACIA KANE has declared March PERSONAL DEMONSTRAVAGANZA MONTH (http://stacia-kane.livejournal.com/48816.html). Prizes include two signed copies of PERSONAL DEMONS, one box of Cocktail Demons, and six Personal Demons magnets. Nine people will win prizes just for mentioning or helping to spotlight PERSONAL DEMONS.

SUBMISSIONS

Although many submissions AFTER January 12 have also been responded to, I'm pretty sure that everything up to that date has gotten some sort of note from me. If you've submitted and not heard anything, you might drop me an email.

And please, read the new guidelines if you are considering submitting!

THITHER & YON

I will be Editor Guest of Honor at Context 21 Sept 26-28 in Columbus OH (http://www.contextsf.org/index.htm#1). I'm also doing individual critiques of novel submission packages for the con. (http://www.contextsf.org/workshop.htm)

I will also be at Romantic Times Booklovers Convention April 17-20 in Pittsburgh. I think I am accepting one-on-one "meet the editor" appointments for that, but it is not finalized. I do know I am doing: URBAN FANTASY 101: Friday, 11am-12pm and MEET THE EDITOR & AGENT PANEL Friday, 4:00am-6:00 pm.

Sean and I will also be attending Wiscon May 23-24 in Madison, WI.

That's it as far as I know for the whole year con-wise. I usually go to World Fantasy Convention and sometimes to Worldcon, but won't be going to either this year. No BEA or ALA either.
